10 Simple Steps to Get Cottage Style

Cottage style bedrooms are a great way to get a cozy and charming look in your bedroom without too much work. Here are 10 simple steps to help you create this style for your bedroom.

  1. Start by adding a ight wall color. I love white walls. They are classic. It’s a nice neutral that you can change up easily with bedding and throw pillows. This will give the space a brighter feel and will be more welcoming.
  2. Choose vintage furniture. Nothing adds the charm quicker than vintage furniture. It’s easy to refresh with paint and new hardware.
  3. Add cozy textiles such as blankets, quilts, and pillows to the bed and chairs in order to add some texture and comfort.
  4. Use plants and flowers to add life to the room, either real or faux.
  5. Add trim to the walls to add charm and texture. Bead board, wainscotting, crown molding or a chair rail are all great ideas.
  6. Upholstered headboard. Making an upholstered headboard is easy and affordable-and oh so comfortable to lean upon.
  7. Add a sitting area. It’s wonderful to have a comfortable place to sit in your bedroom. Whether just to remove your shoes or to read your favorite novel.
  8. Use toile fabrics. I adore toile fabrics. It has wonderful cottage appeal.
  9. Use draperies on the windows. They will add softness, character and sound absorption.
  10. Add natural elements. Baskets or woven wood blinds are great ideas to add warmth and texture.

Next, I added some trim to the top of the wallpaper, creating a chair rail. If you have been round for any amount of time, you now that the first place that I go for trim is to the scrap pile in my barn. I used a 1 x 4″ board, a lintel trim along the top og the board and an ogee edge trim along the bottom edge.

TIP: Attach all three wood pieces before you cut it to length. This ensures that the end cuts will always match up beautifully.

I love my Ryobi chop saw and my Rigid nail gun. They make the job so much easier.

Then, I painted the wallpaper, trim and walls white. My favorite white paint color is Alabaster from Sherwin Williams. I love how light and bright the room is and the added wallpaper and trim add so much character.

Not only do the light walls add to the restful feeling, but the neutral draperies and the neutral bedding make the bedroom feel more peaceful. Avoid lots of color or loud patterns. I reupholstered the headboard in a lovely toile pattern with muted colors-soft blues and greens, cream and taupe. This still adds loads of interest without being too loud. I added interest and texture to this room by adding several different patterns and textures. Blue velvet pillows, antelope print pillows, linen pillows. I used a faux fur throw across the end of the bed. I made a dust ruffle with the toile fabric. The chairs in the sitting area are a soft cream damask pattern.

Adding Greenery and Natural Elements

There is mothing that grounds a room more than adding greenery and natural elements. The greenery can either be faux or real. A plant on the nightstand or end table in the sitting area, or a larger plant or tree in a corner. By putting the plant in a basket adds even more texture and interest. I used woven wood blinds on the windows , as well. I love the warmth that it adds.

Renae....I love the carpet in your cottage bedroom! Can I ask what the brand is and style? I need to replace the carpet in my home and I'm looking for a tight looking weave that almost looks like sisal. Thank you and I enjoy your website! I hope to come to Peacock farms soon for a visit. My friends Matt and Darin are at Laurel Hedge which I believe is close to you! Cheers!
