This DIY project may seem overwhelming at first, but with a little bit of planning and hard work, you can create a beautiful path that leads to your doorstep (or in my case, to my chicken coop) and sets the scene for wonderful hospitality and cozy relaxation.
Today, I am sharing How to Create a Beautiful Cottage Stone Walkway.
Come on, I’ll show you.
Creating a beautiful cottage style walkway was something I’ve always dreamt about doing but never knew where to start.
When we built our quaint new chicken coop last year, I knew it was time to stop dreaming and start planning.
I wanted to create a walkway from the driveway to the coop, which was currently just plain grass.
A stone path would not only look nicer but also add so much more character.
After many evenings researching different stone walkway ideas online, I was feeling inspired.
Where would I even begin?
This spring I decided it was time to dive in and get my hands dirty.
I wanted to share my whole process with you all- as well as what I learned to create your own gorgeous stone walkway oasis!
It is a great way to add visual interest to your garden.
Get ready for an exciting rock-laying adventure.
Here is the “before’ pic.We needed a path through the grass, so that we didn’t leave a muddy mess.

Add character and charm to your outdoor space with our easy-to-follow guide.
To create your very own cottage stone walkway, you’ll need to follow a few simple steps.
First, gather inspiration from various sources.
You might browse Pinterest or home renovation magazines to get ideas for the style and design of your walkway.
You’ll want to consider the color and texture of the stones, as well as the pattern you want to lay them in.
Do you want a winding path that meanders through your garden, or a straight path that leads directly to your front door?

Next, plan the layout of your walkway.
Get out a piece of graph paper and sketch a rough layout of the path.
Measure the space you have to work with and decide how wide you want the walkway to be.
Keep in mind that you’ll need to account for any curves or turns in the path, as well as any obstacles like trees, shrubs, or flower beds.
Once you have a layout in mind, lay out your stones.
It’s time to start digging!
Use a shovel to cut the grass around each stone.
Then, remove the grass and soil from the area where you want to install the stone.
Try to dig down at least 4 inches to provide a stable base for your stones.
Then, spread a layer of gravel or sand over the entire area to create a level surface for your stones to sit on.
Cut the grass, lay the sand and lay one stone at a time.
Start at one end of the path and carefully position each stone in place, making sure it’s level and flush with the stones around it.
Use a rubber mallet to tap the stones into place and create a tight fit between each one.
Depending on the size and shape of your stones, you may need to use a chisel or saw to cut them to fit.
Once the stones are laid, go back and spread some sand around each stone to lock it into place.
Once the grass or ground cover grow back in, the sand will not show.
I love the look of a traditional cottage garden with picket fences and garden pathways.
I have been working hard to add that cottage garden feel to my farm.
To create that cottage garden vibe, I have added a wisteria arbor, that adds so much charm to my flower garden.
I have added an outdoor dining table and seating area surrounded by my favorite favorite cottage garden plants, wisteria, hydrangeas, ornamental grasses, cottage roses, lavender and day lilies.
I also love to add fragrant plants like jasmine, daphnes and mock orange.
I love choose plants with different shapes and varying heights to add more interest to my cottage-style garden.
I dream of making my garden reminiscent of the English Countryside and having a winding stone pathway running through it is the perfect addition.
For for more cottage garden ideas, try adding:
A white picket fence
Ground cover between the stones
Add sweet peas
A bird baths or water feature
Add garden furniture and natural materials to your outdoor area or garden area for rustic charm in your English garden.
By adding a meandering path to your outdoor dining area, seating areas or your patio, your garden transforms into the loveliest cottage garden.

As you lay the stones, be sure to step back frequently to check the overall pattern and make any adjustments as needed.
Once you’ve completed the entire path, sweep sand or gravel over the stones to fill in any gaps and create a smooth surface for walking.
Finally, add the finishing touches to your new cottage stone walkway.
For an added touch, install edging along the sides of the path to keep the stones in place and prevent them from shifting over time.
You might also add lighting along the path for a magical evening ambiance.
In no time at all, you’ll have a stunning new feature in your garden that adds timeless character and charm.
I absolutely love my cottage stone walkway and love seeing my guests’ reactions as they approach my chicken coop.
Best of all, I now have a beautiful space to enjoy on warm summer evenings as I wander through my garden.
