How to Make New Silver Chargers Look Vintage

What you will need, if using antiquing wax:

  • New silver chargers
  • Latex gloves
  • Antiquing paste wax 
  • Sponge brush
  • Lint free rag, soft cloth or paper towel

Instructions– if using wax:

  1. Clean the silver chargers with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt.
  2. Dip the sponge brush into the wax and then dab it onto the charger, making sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies. 
  3. Using a clean lint free rag, lightly buff the wax.  Allow wax to remain in the nooks and crannies.  This is was will create that aged look.
  4. (Optional) If you want the chargers to look even more vintage, you can use sandpaper to lightly distress the chargers in some areas.

What you will need, if using acrylic paint:

  • New silver chargers
  • Latex gloves
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paper plate or paint palette
  • Sponge brush
  • Clear acrylic sealer 
  • Sandpaper (optional)
  • Glazing medium for acrylic paint

Instructions– if using acrylic paint:

  1. Clean the silver chargers with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt.
  2. Pour some black acrylic paint onto a paper plate and mix in glazing medium.
  3. Dip the sponge brush into the paint and then dab it onto the charger in a random pattern. Be sure to apply more paint to some areas than others to create a natural-looking aged effect.
  4. Let the paint dry completely.
  5. (Optional) Once the paint is dry, If you want the chargers to look even more vintage, you can use sandpaper to lightly distress the paint in some areas.
  6. Apply a coat of clear acrylic sealer to protect the paint and give the chargers a nice shine.

Tips:

  • For a more dramatic effect, you can use a dark brown or gray paint instead of black.
  • Use any color you like.
  • You can also layer other vintage touches to your chargers, such as antiquing wax on decoupage papered chargers.
