Looking for tips and tricks to update your furniture. I have a great paint technique for you.
Welcome! I am so glad that you are here. I always enjoy our time together. Don’t you love a good DIY project? Do you have a piece of furniture that has “great bones”, but just doesn’t fit into your decor style? Today, I am sharing How to Refinish Furniture in 4 Easy Steps. Come on, I’ll show you.
I love shopping on Facebook Marketplace. Don’t you? I find some of the best stuff for great prices. Recently I found two matching nightstands that had great detail on them for only $50. It was such a great deal. But… they were black and they just didn’t fit into my design plan.
This is the “before” pic. So sorry for the poor quality photo. I got so excited to start the project, that I forgot to take a picture-then I had to get a screenshot from the video. I love all of the bamboo details, but they just didn’t show well with the black finish.
I love Dixie Belle products. They make refinishing furniture so easy. The founder of the company loved to refinish furniture, but hated all of the awful prep steps. So she created her line of products to do double duty and eliminate some of the steps. I’m incredibly grateful to her, because I hate those messy prep steps as well. For this project, I used Dixie Belle paint in Sand Bar, Best Dang Wax in white and the applicator sponge. You can click the link for purchasing Dixie Belle Paints from my website.
What is special about Dixie Belle paint?
Their chalk mineral paint has great coverage, self levels, and self seals. Dixie Belle Paint is the #1 Leading Chalk Mineral Paint Company in the USA! You don’t have to sand, that’s one of the many benefits of chalk paints.
Step 1: Clean the furniture. Dixie Belle has a great cleaning product called White Lightning. You always, always, always want to clean your piece well! This is the number one thing that will make or break your final product. To mix, add 2 Tablespoons of granulated cleaner to a gallon of hot water.
Step 2: Remove all hardware.
Step 3: I applied two even coats to the nightstands and let them dry completely between each coat. Make sure you use a great brush, it is one way to reduce brushstrokes. Using a spray misting bottle filled with water when painting on your second coat helps minimize any brushstrokes and keeps your paint finish looking flawless, as well. The paintbrush below is a great brush, you can get it from the Dixie Belle link above.

Step 4: Add the wax. Using the sponge applicator, spread the wax onto the furniture in small sections, then buff it well. I made sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies. It really made the details stand out. I love the finished product.
