Learn how to take an old, neglected shutter and turn it into something beautiful! In this article, we’ll show you the tips and tricks for upcycling vintage shutters.

Hey Friends!

I’m so glad that you stopped by.

If you are anything like me, you just can’t pass up anything vintage with great character, no matter what the condition.

I found a diamond in the rough and I’m excited to share it with you.

I found a pair of chippy old shutters for only $10 each. I knew that I had to have them, even though I had no idea what I was going to do with them.

I also had this pair of old outdoor sconces that I wasn’t using.

My husband and I were in the middle of a renovation in our movie room.

So, I got to thinking how I could use these vintage items and I came with the idea to make a shutter sconce out of them.

I’m going to show to how I made them step by step.

These are the supplies that I usesd.

This is what you will need to do this project.

Shutter

Sconce

Saw Horses

Spray cleaner and paper towels

Paint Scraper

Cordless drill with screw bit and drill bit

Wire cutter

Wire stripper

Screwdriver

Nuts and bolts to fit your sconce, long enough to get through the shutter

Lamp cord

J box cover

Wire nuts

D rings

Picture hanging cable

Hammer

Marker

These are the tools that I used.

The first thing that I did was to srape any loose paint from the shutter and then cleaned them.

I removed any nails or screws.

I liked the chippy finish, so I’m not going to paint it.

If you want to paint your shutter, this is the time to do it.

Then I cleaned the sconce. I set my shutter on saw horses to make it easier to work on it.

I put my sconce on the shutter and decided where I wanted to attach the sconce. Then, using the j box cover, I marked my holes.

Drill your holes, making sure that they are big enough for your screws to fit through.

Now comes the tricky part.

My lamp cord came with a light bulb socket, so I cut it off using my wire cutters.

The wires on your sconce should be stripped already.

But you will need to strip the wires on the lamp cord.

I clipped between the wires first to split the wires and pulled them a part. Then I stripped them.

I threaded my lamp cord through the j box cover, then poked it through the shutter from back to front.

Now, you will need to twist together one of the wires from the sconce with one of the wires from the cord, then twist on the wire nut-making sure that there are not any exposed wires.

Repeat with the other two wires.

Line up the holes of the sconce with the holes in your shutter and j box cover. Insert your srews and tighten your bolts. With the thickness of the shutter, you will need much longer screws than the ones provided with the j box cover.

You are almost done and the hard part is over. Whew!

Now, lay out your D rings and attach them to the shutter.

Then attach the picture cable to both of the D rings.

I find it easier to hang artwork with only one wall anchor to hang. Sometimes it gets tricky having to install two anchors to hang artwork.

Now, you are all done and ready to hang it.

My shutter sconce.

And there you have it.

I really love how the shutter sconces turned out.

I was able to repurpose some random vintage items and make something beautiful and useful out of them.

They add so much character to this room.

This sconce was attached to a vintage table leaf. I love this idea as well. I hope that this has encouraged you to try this project.
