What do I Need to Reupholster a Beautiful Vintage Stool?

How to Reupholster a Beautiful Vintage Stool

I found this amazing stool a few years ago while antiquing.

I love the details-they are just so pretty.

And, it was in great shape-it just needed a good cleaning and a new cushion.

Warning! I don’t go for perfection when I do these projects, because–well, I’m just not perfect.

Not even close.

But, I do try to do a good job.

You will need: a vintage stool, foam pad, fabric, needle nose pliers, reupholstery hammer, fabric scissors, a serrated knife, a marking pen, batting and upholstery nails.

This is an easy project that you can easily finish in about an hour.

It is a great beginner project.

How Do I Reupholster a Vintage Stool?

The first thing that I did was to remove the seat from the stool base.

This will make is so much easier to reupholster the seat.

Next, I used needle nose pliers to remove the old upholstery nails.

Then I laid the seat upside down onto the foam.

I traced around it with a black marking pen.

The easiest way that I have found to cut foam is with a serrated knife.

You can also use and electric knife.

Next, I laid the seat onto the back side of the fabric.

Using a fabric measuring tape, I measured the width and length of the fabric plus the two inches of foam(be sure to measure the 2″ of foam on both sides,) plus adding enough fabric to attach to the back of the seat.

Example: if your seat is 12″ x 12″ wide, you would need to add a total of 4″ for the foam and about 2-4″ to attach to the back of the seat. So you would need 18-20″ x 18-20″ of fabric and batting.

So, I decided not to use the batting between the cushion and the fabric, and just tack the fabric to the edge of the wooden seat.

The batting makes the fabric lay much nicer on the cushion.

My seat is a bit different, as it has a decorative edge that I didn’t want to cover up with the fabric.

I ended up turning the fabric under before tacking it down.

I don’t really love the finish of the cushion without the batting, but I do like being able to see the decorative edge detail.
